Meet Our Hard-Working Moms: Alyssa

Virtual Assistant Life

Alyssa has been a Mom’s Work Hard student for only 4 months, but she caught our attention when she wrote in to thank us for the course and added, “I am now able to help my family financially while still being able to stay home and take care of my daughter.”

Friends, that’s the heart of Moms Work Hard and Alyssa absolutely made our day when we heard she’s home with her girl, and able to contribute to the family finances. What a blessing!

So, of course, we had to interview Alyssa to find out what she’s doing and how she’s made Virtual Assistant life work for her. We hope her answers encourage you, too, and remind you to just get started!

Meet a brand new Virtual Assistant who's already staying home with her daughter while adding to her family's finances

Introduce yourself! Tell us about your family.

My name is Alyssa, and I’m a wife and mom of a 20-month old girl. I’m the second oldest of 8 kids, and I love playing the piano, dancing (I grew up taking hip-hop, ballet, and jazz classes), and drinking coffee! But really, what mom doesn’t love coffee?

What did you do before Virtual Assistant work?

Before working as a VA, I worked for The Salvation Army Kroc Center Hawaii as a Program Manager. In this position, I got to plan and oversee classes in arts and music, as well as a Day Camp program. I really loved my job, but strongly felt called to leave so I could focus on raising my daughter.

Why did you decide to enroll in the Moms Work Hard course?

I decided to enroll in the course after I watched the free introductory class (You can watch that free class at the bottom of this page). Everything that Carlee and Victoria said about why they started their own VA businesses was pretty much exactly where I was at. I needed a way to bring in income while still having the flexibility and availability to stay at home with my daughter. I knew that I did not want to sell a product, and I knew that I actually loved being administrative support.

How has VA work changed you or your family?

It’s really awesome to be able to contribute financially again without the burden of having to find childcare. I love that I can work out a schedule that’s comfortable for our family and take some of the financial pressure off my husband.

So far, what has been the hardest thing about being a VA?

The hardest thing has been just getting started. It was hard for me to feel “ready enough” to actually launch the business and put it out there. Now that I have a client, I am seeing where my gaps are, but I am trying to be patient with myself because I knew there would be a learning curve going into this.

What do you enjoy most about working as a VA?

I enjoy working as a VA because it’s fulfilling! Prior to being a Program Manager, I was an Assistant to the Education Director and then Program Director (also at The Salvation Army Kroc Center Hawaii). I found that, although I enjoyed being Program Manager, I liked being an assistant even more. I liked helping other people reach their goals. And I think I was better at being an assistant than a manager anyway. So I’m excited to help others out through my business! On top of that, I love being able to use a different part of my brain for a couple of hours every day, and I am kind of proud of myself for facing my fears and self-doubt and actually starting this business.

Who would you encourage to take the course and why?

If you are a mom who is looking for a way to help your family out financially, I’d say definitely take the course! It’s not one of those too-good-to-be-true things. You can do this! This course gives you the tools and the confidence to start your own VA business. I really appreciate that it was affordable. Carlee and Victoria really get moms, and the struggle bus we’re on, and I feel that they really want you to succeed.

Anything else to add?

Thanks again, Carlee and Victoria, for sharing what you do and how to do it! It has really been a HUGE blessing, and life-changing, for me.
